Sports in Queen’s College were under different categories, the major ones being Athletics, Netball, Swimming and Hockey. The day usually started off between 5:00 a. m and 5:30 a. m when every student would go for cross country race down to Sabo and back before showering. Gymnastics was done during the physical education period of each class. Every student was given a white brief to wear under a white blouse. This used to be a source of fun because wearing it was like wearing panties hereby making one feel undressed.

Another aspect of sports was Netball. Queen’s College Netball Team was a force to be reckoned with, if not the best, in the netball circles in Lagos state. Netball competitions were usually during the second term. Students participation in swimming was not high probably due to the following reasons:

a.     Lack of swimming facilities in the school

b.     The assumption that swimming was for ajebutters i.e spoilt brats from rich families

The few students who took up swimming were very good and won several laurels for the school at every competition. Mention should be made of likes of Esther Ovuworie and Susan Allanso both of 1968-1972/74 set.

Hockey was not a popular game probably because of fear of being hit by a hockey stick. Athletics however, was the live wire sports at Queen’s College. Athletic competitions were always very interesting and the relay team was a force to be reckoned with in Lagos state and beyond.
